A large book fair can be exciting from the moment you walk in. It can also create one immediate question: Where do I start?
With so many exhibitors, books, events, and conversations happening at once, it’s impossible to experience everything. The goal isn’t to see it all. The goal is to make the most of what matters to you while leaving enough space for discovery.
Start With Three Priorities
Before you arrive, choose three things you definitely want to see. It could be:
- A particular author
- A book signing
- A publisher or exhibitor
- A specific section
- A title you want to find
Keeping the list short helps you stay focused without overplanning the entire day. Once those priorities are covered, you can explore more freely.
Don’t Spend the Whole Day Following the Crowd
Popular areas naturally attract attention, but some of the most interesting finds may be in the quieter parts of the fair. Walk through booths you don’t recognize. Look at books from authors you’ve never read. Pause when something catches your eye.
Discovery is one of the biggest advantages of being physically present at a book fair.
Ask Questions
If a book interests you, talk to the people at the booth. Ask what it’s about. Ask what kind of reader might enjoy it. If the author is present, ask what inspired the story.
Book fairs aren’t only places to look at books — they’re places to talk about them.
Use Your Phone as a Reading List
You may find more books than you can reasonably carry. Instead of trying to remember everything, take photos of covers, save author names, or make a quick note. By the end of the day, you may have built an entirely new reading list.
Give Yourself Time to Browse
Don’t schedule every minute. If every stop is planned, you may miss the spontaneous moments that make book fairs special. Leave time to wander — you may discover a story simply because a title caught your attention from across the aisle.
Plan Around Signings
If you want to meet an author, schedule your route around their signing time and arrive a little earlier than necessary so you’re not rushing.

Before leaving the fair, challenge yourself to choose one book, author, or genre you wouldn’t normally explore. It doesn’t have to become your new favorite — but it might.
